The new research recently published by Harvard researchers in the British Medical Journal, suggesting that the Mediterranean Diet is associated with healthy aging, adds to the overwhelming evidence behind this dietary pattern and reinforces the importance of a balanced healthy diet.
At a time when consumer confusion about grains and carbohydrates is at an all-time high, this new Harvard study is particularly timely.
Pasta is a key component of Mediterranean Diet and pasta meals are a delicious way to eat more vegetables, legumes, and other healthy foods often under-consumed.
Asked to comment on this new report, Prof. Marta Garaulet Aza, PhD, Professor of Physiology and Nutrition Department of Physiology, University of Murcia in Spain and Member of IPO Scientific Advisory Board, noted “This study adds more scientific evidence for the Mediterranean Diet, no one food, but the whole diet, the overall pattern of the Mediterranean Diet. It’s exciting to see another kind of evidence — DNA — related to successful aging for those most closely following the Mediterranean Diet.”
Prof. Garaulet added that “this is in the same line as new nutrigenetics studies performed by our Nutrition group at the University of Murcia (Spain) in collaboration with colleagues in Nutrition and Genetics at Tufts University (Boston, Mass). We are demonstrating that Mediterranean diet components or behaviors may interact with different genes and exert a protective role against obesity. This is the case of different genetic variants, which lose their obesogenic action when the subject highly adheres to Mediterranean diet patterns.”
Prof. Gaurelet Aza is one of the scientist that contributed to the on-demand webinar “Pasta: A Unique Grain Food”, speaking about pasta and weight management, and more specifically, pasta’s contribution to reducing obesity.
